How to Overcome Body Shame During Sex

A Conversation with Sierra Sullivan

Dr. Diane: Welcome to the Libido Lounge where we focus on all things love, lust, and libido. We believe that fabulous sex is as important to health as exercise and good food. Alright everybody, welcome back to another episode of the Libido Lounge. I’m your host Dr. Diane and I am so excited for this conversation today. This is a very dear friend and couple’s relationship and pussy expert—we’re going to talk about what that means today. Sierra Sullivan has such a rich background, we’re going to get into that. But first of all, welcome! I’m so happy to be here with you, Sierra.

Sierra Sullivan: Oh, thank you for having me. I’m super excited for our call, or our connection today—our chat, or whatever we’re going to do!

Dr. Diane: Yeah, well let’s dive right in. I already said this word—”pussy”—that I know some people are still, a lot of people actually, still have a lot of negative reaction around. We’re going to talk about the science of “piology” and how it’s connected to healing from genital shame and helping us love our body and have fuller expression as women. But let’s start with some of the shame behind this word. Can you break it down and share how you started a different relationship with that word?

Reclaiming the Word “Pussy”

Sierra Sullivan: That’s a great question. Yes, that word still absolutely hits people in a spot that can be super uncomfortable—especially if you’re not in circles where it’s being used a lot. It hit me weird the first time too. It’s been used as slang, as a slur, in porn—so until we reclaim it fully, it carries that weight.

I have to give credit where credit is due. There’s a book called Pussy: A Reclamation by Regina Thomashauer. That book put the word back on the map. It came out around the same time as the Women’s March with the pussy hats, and also during the election when a former president got in trouble for using that word. It all converged in the media and allowed people to reclaim the word, to find power and even righteousness in it.

So whether you like the word or not, just notice how your body reacts when it’s said—that’s a litmus test for where you might still have work to do in your own healing.

Dr. Diane: That’s so helpful—and you’re giving me chills! I didn’t realize all those things happened in such divine timing. It really was a collective moment of reclamation.

What Is Piology?

Dr. Diane: Can you tell us how the work of piology was born? Let’s start with: What is it?

Sierra Sullivan: Sure. It has more of a mystical than a scientific origin, but it was born out of me. I had been running a big event called Fun, Fabulous & Feminine to help women reconnect with pleasure, power, femininity, and magic. But I noticed about 20% of the model felt out of alignment for me, even as I was teaching it.

Eventually, the universe gave me signs—loud ones. I didn’t listen until I had a big event flop in 2016. I ended up blowing up my brand and taking a pause. I chose to become a “nobody” for a while—stop building, stop performing—and just listen.

During that quiet time, I was shown a ritual, what I now call the “Pussy Ritual.” One night, I was guided to sit with a woman, look at her vulva, and simply share what I saw—loving, neutral witnessing. No touch, no sexual charge—just sacred witnessing. And something magical happened. Her shame lifted. It was instant.

The Portal of Truth: Our Unique Design

Sierra Sullivan: I realized in that moment that every pussy has a unique divine design—like a fingerprint. When you sit and look with loving eyes, messages, symbols, archetypes emerge. It’s like reading tea leaves, but more intimate and profound.

One woman I worked with had scar tissue she felt deep shame about, and in that session, she transformed. She’d been working on self-love for years, and this unlocked it in a heartbeat.

Over time, I realized the vulva can reveal a woman’s story. It offers codes, symbolism, even astrological hints. It’s the OG stargate—every human comes through it—and yet we barely look at it, much less listen to it.

Witnessing and Sisterhood in Healing

Dr. Diane: Thank you so much. I’m getting waves of chills hearing you talk about this. It’s so true—we often don’t even look at that part of our body. And when you describe how it holds messages, it makes me think about how beautiful that must feel—like, “My pussy is beautiful because it holds meaning.”

Sierra Sullivan: Yes. And the witnessing piece is key. Women being seen by other women in their rawness—there’s so much power there. Whether it’s in sensual dance classes, pole dancing, or women’s circles, being witnessed without judgment is transformational.

Dr. Diane: Yes! I’ve felt that too. So in your work, where does the circle of sisterhood come in?

Sierra Sullivan: I’ve been leading women’s circles for nearly 20 years. What’s powerful is when women witness each other’s vulvas and reflect back what they see—with love. No touch, just presence. And when a few women get readings in a group, something profound happens. Women realize every single one is different—like fingerprints—and it breaks the comparison game.

Instead of competition, there’s celebration. That celebration of uniqueness is one of the most healing things I’ve ever witnessed. It bonds women instantly.

Who Is This For?

Dr. Diane: I can feel it too! So who is this really for? Who would benefit most from piology?

Sierra Sullivan: It’s really for anyone who wants a deeper relationship with that part of themselves. Whether you’re just starting out or already sex-positive and doing this work, there’s value.

For practitioners, it can become part of your toolset. For women healing shame, it’s a doorway into acceptance. Our mission is to eradicate shame, hone intuition, and empower women globally to change the conversation from negativity to magnificence.

How to Take the First Step

Dr. Diane: I know even just hearing the word “pussy” can be edgy for some listeners—and now we’re talking about reading messages from it! For those who are curious but a bit timid, what’s a gentle first step into your work?

Sierra Sullivan: A great toe-dip is just to start with yourself. Look in the mirror. Be curious. Be gentle. We also have offerings and courses that meet people where they are—intro level and advanced. You don’t have to dive in all at once.
