Unlocking the Female Orgasm: Myths, Science, and Secrets Revealed
Dr. Diane: Welcome to the Libido Lounge, where we focus on all things love, lust, and libido. We believe that fabulous sex is just as important to health as exercise and good food. Hey everybody, welcome back to another episode of the Lounge! I’m your Libido Lounge host, Dr. Diane. Today, we’re diving into a fascinating discussion about climax, orgasm, and the science behind it. We’re going to cover everything from different types of orgasms to strategies and tools to enhance your experience. We’ll also talk about why some of us may struggle to experience orgasm and what you can do about it.
The Hormonal Benefits of Orgasm
Dr. Diane: First, let’s talk about the incredible hormonal benefits of orgasm. When you experience climax, your body releases a flood of feel-good hormones like serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin. Oxytocin, in particular, is that wonderful “feel-good” hormone that helps re-regulate your stress response, makes you feel calm, happy, and connected to others—especially if you’re with a partner. But even if you’re not having sex or experiencing orgasm, you can still reap the benefits of oxytocin through intimacy, like hugging someone you care about.
What to Do if You Can’t Reach Orgasm
Dr. Diane: Now, if you’re someone who has never experienced orgasm or used to experience it but can’t anymore, this episode is for you. There are many reasons why orgasm can become elusive. It could be physical, like nerve damage or structural issues, or even emotional or mental. Sometimes, even though we’re not consciously aware of it, the pressure to achieve orgasm can create tension that actually inhibits pleasure.
Nerve Damage and Orgasm
Dr. Diane: One key factor that can impact orgasm is nerve damage. The nerves of the pelvic floor, particularly the pudendal nerve, play a crucial role in pleasure. We also know that the vagus nerve, which is the 10th cranial nerve, can influence orgasm. So, if there’s trauma to any of these nerves, like from an injury or accident, it could make it harder to reach climax. But the body is resilient. In some studies, even when a nerve is severed, other nerves can compensate, so orgasm can still be achieved through different pathways.
Structural and Blood Flow Issues
Dr. Diane: Sometimes, structural issues in the pelvis can also interfere with orgasm. For example, if you’ve ever had an injury like a hard fall, you could be compressing the nerves that signal pleasure. Similarly, blood flow plays a vital role in orgasm. The pudendal artery is responsible for bringing blood to the clitoris, and if that flow is interrupted, it can make it harder to experience orgasm. This is why proper circulation and nutrients like citrulline are important for sexual health.
Mental and Emotional Factors
Dr. Diane: Another aspect that can affect climax is mental and emotional pressure. I’ve seen it in myself and heard from many others—when there’s too much focus on achieving orgasm, it can create stress that actually prevents it from happening. The goal should be to relax, enjoy the pleasure, and be present in the moment without obsessing over the end result.
The Different Types of Orgasms
Dr. Diane: Now, let’s talk about the different types of orgasms. Many people think there’s only one way to reach orgasm, but there are multiple types, such as G-spot, cervical, and clitoral orgasms. Each of these can offer a different kind of pleasure and sensation. Contrary to what some people may say, there isn’t one “ultimate” orgasm. Every type of orgasm has its own unique qualities, and each one can be deeply fulfilling in its own way.
Radical Orgasms and Healing
Dr. Diane: One of the most powerful forms of orgasm is what I like to call a “radical orgasm.” These can be transformative, not just physically, but also emotionally and spiritually. When you experience a radical orgasm, it can help reprogram negative mental stories, alleviate trauma, and release stored emotions. A particularly powerful moment occurs when you and your partner use the climax to whisper positive affirmations to each other, helping to rewire your subconscious in real-time.
Starting the Journey Toward Orgasm
Dr. Diane: If you’ve been struggling with orgasm or haven’t had one in a long time, where should you start? First, check in with your physical health. Ensure your pelvic floor is functioning properly, and look at things like blood sugar levels and insulin resistance, which can affect sexual function. If your body is out of alignment, that can also play a role in limiting orgasmic potential. But it’s not just about physical health—working on your mental health is just as crucial. Let go of any pressure or mental blocks that might be preventing you from truly relaxing and enjoying the experience.
Pelvic Floor Health and Jaw Tension
Dr. Diane: Another important factor is pelvic floor health. Many of us don’t realize how connected the pelvic floor and jaw are. If you’re a jaw clencher or teeth grinder, it’s very likely that you’re also holding tension in your pelvic floor, which can prevent pleasure. Using vibrators or wands can actually help release this tension, bringing more blood flow to the area and promoting better orgasms.
