In this raw conversation, Dr. Diane Mueller sits down with Jenn Trepeck, award-winning health coach and host of Salad with a Side of Fries, to expose how everyday stress hijacks your sexual desire—flooding you with cortisol that shuts down arousal, tanks hormone production, and leaves you disconnected from your partner. They dive into the brutal truth: when your nervous system is locked in fight-or-flight, sex becomes the last thing on your body’s priority list, no matter how much you “try” to want it. Expect no-BS insights on why emotional safety is the foundation for rebuilding trust, desire, and intimacy—because without it, every other fix feels like slapping a band-aid on a broken system.

And so began her weight management saga. Ultimately though, Jenn learned the nutrition education we’re all supposed to know but no one ever taught us. This completely changed her life and allowed her to say she “kicked her food issues.” From then, Jenn set-out on a mission to pay it forward and help people help themselves. After over a decade of working with clients, Jenn started Salad with a Side of Fries podcast. Based on science, yet lighthearted, Jenn talks about living life while still making ourselves and our health a priority. https://www.instagram.com/saladwithasideoffriespod/ https://www.instagram.com/jenntrepeck/?hl=en https://www.facebook.com/Saladwithasideoffriespodcast?https://www.facebook.com/JenniferTrepeck https://m.facebook.com/groups/425796548337541/ https://x.com/jenntrepeck?https://www.linkedin.com/in/jennifertrepeck/ www.youtube.com/@jenntrepeck?https://www.tiktok.com/@jenntrepeck https://asaladwithasideoffries.com/ https://open.spotify.com/show/6mtUfSykWtrePCk4iRzW0d?si=3342b3113060475d

Introduction to Sexual Health and Our Guest
Dr. Diane Mueller: Hey everybody, welcome back to another episode of the Libido Lounge. We’re talking today about something we haven’t covered much here—and it’s crucial. We’re diving into nutrition, weight, and how they directly influence your libido. We’ll explore sustainable weight management without extreme dieting, hear Jenn’s personal story, and connect it all back to your sexual wellness, desire, and relationships. I’m excited to introduce my new friend, Jenn Trepeck. Welcome to the show, Jenn!
Jenn Trepeck: Thank you so much. I’m excited to be here.
Jenn Trepeck’s Health and Wellness Journey
Dr. Diane Mueller: Let’s jump right in. You have a unique story around health, weight, and going from “no problem” to real struggles. Many listeners will relate. Tell us about your saga—what shifted?
Jenn Trepeck: I appreciate “saga”—it captures the drama better than “journey.” I grew up as a dancer, eating healthfully, and weight wasn’t an issue. But my family dieted constantly—every fad of the 80s and 90s. Between high school and college, I stopped dancing intensely, started birth control, went to college—the weight came on. I did every diet, rode the roller coaster of gain and loss. By my early to mid-20s, it felt like I could just breathe and gain weight. Nothing made sense—I was doing the “right” things. Then I found this approach, worked with a coach, followed it fully, and it changed everything. No more food issues. It turned me into a student of why we aren’t taught this basic info. I’ve been a health coach since 2007, host Salad with a Side of Fries, and my book Uncomplicating Wellness came out recently.
Dr. Diane Mueller: I love that you included a chapter on sexual health in your book—it’s so important. Many in my practice follow “perfect” plans—paleo, whatever—and still struggle. It’s frustrating when you’re choosing “right” but nothing shifts.
The Stress and Libido Connection: Why Your Body’s Survival Mode Kills Desire
Dr. Diane Mueller: Let’s tie nutrition to sexual wellness. What does your book say about this link?
Jenn Trepeck: Sexual health is an indicator of overall health and what’s happening inside. Everything connects—we ignore hunger whispers but libido grabs attention. It’s tied to blood flow, stress management, sleep, hormones. When stressed, cortisol rises and libido drops. High cortisol means fight-or-flight dominates; reproduction shuts down because survival trumps everything. If you’re never out of that state, feeling desire feels impossible—like climbing Everest naked.
Dr. Diane Mueller: Exactly. We remove stigma: libido issues are flags saying “imbalance alert.” Not personal failure—just the body communicating.
Nervous System and Sexual Desire: Fight or Flight vs. Rest and Desire
Dr. Diane Mueller: Break down metabolic health and its role in sex drive.
Jenn Trepeck: Metabolic health is how your body uses fuel—impacting every system. Key is blood sugar balance. Dysregulation thickens blood, impairs flow. We need flow for arousal, lubrication, erections, brain function, desire. Protein and fiber at every meal makes sexual desire no big deal—eat what you like, but prioritize clean lean protein, veggies/fruit fiber, quality fats like avocado, nuts, omega-3s for hormones.
Dr. Diane Mueller: Blood flow matters for women too—lubrication and arousal depend on it, not just men.
Jenn Trepeck: Absolutely. Antioxidants from produce support flow; quality fats build hormones. Balance omega-3s and -6s.
Emotional Safety and Libido: Building Trust for Desire to Return
Dr. Diane Mueller: Supplements vs. food?
Jenn Trepeck: Supplements add to, not replace, lifestyle. Fix foundations first—nutrition, stress. But if it’s a “house fire,” targeted supps help initially.
Hormonal Balance, Stress, and the Sex Drive Shutdown
Dr. Diane Mueller: Nutrition’s role in hormones?
Jenn Trepeck: Quality fats are essential for hormone production. Imbalances snowball. High cortisol blocks sexual hormones—fight-or-flight prioritizes survival over intimacy.
Dr. Diane Mueller: Stress is biochemical, not just mood. Our perception sees the tip; the body feels the iceberg—including daily micro-stressors.
Jenn Trepeck: Bodies don’t distinguish email stress from a saber-tooth tiger. We need signals of safety to exit fight-or-flight.
Practical Steps: Rebuilding Emotional Intimacy and Sex Drive
Dr. Diane Mueller: Beyond diet—what helps stress?
Jenn Trepeck: Movement burns fight-or-flight energy. Deep diaphragmatic breathing signals “threat passed.” Habit-stack it—before meals, alarms. Connection: vent to friends, journal. Tiny walks count—working stress out.
Dr. Diane Mueller: Tiny habits last.
Jenn Trepeck: Sleep too—humans deprive ourselves uniquely. Deep sleep (11pm-3am) detoxes, resets hormones. Poor sleep scrambles libido, energy, choices.
Dr. Diane Mueller: Quality over just hours. Trackers help, but don’t override how you feel.
Jenn Trepeck: Use data as one point—don’t outsource intuition.
Wrap-Up and Key Takeaways
Dr. Diane Mueller: Anything else crucial?
Jenn Trepeck: It’s all connected—foundations like nutrition, sleep, stress management underpin libido. You’re not broken; your body is signaling.
Dr. Diane Mueller: Thank you, Jenn. Nutrition, sleep, water, hormones—these basics matter before advanced fixes. Remember, sexual health flags whole-body balance.
